The Administration for Community Living is putting $3 million behind wider use of ABLE savings accounts for people with disabilities. On Sept. 29, ACL announced a three-year Project of National Significance cooperative agreement to Northwestern University’s RISEI Lab to lead Project ReachABLE with nonprofit partner TransCen, Inc.
The project will share ABLE and money-management information at key life moments — work, benefits, education, and services — and run community and national outreach so more eligible people with I/DD and other disabilities enroll. ACL and a National ABLE Advisory Group will guide the work; more than half of advisory members will be people with disabilities and self-advocates. Why this matters for providers and DSPs
ABLE accounts let many people with disabilities save without the same Medicaid resource cliffs that push families toward institutional options. Supports coordinators and DSPs who help with benefits planning can point families to official ABLE information as Project ReachABLE materials roll out — while leaving enrollment decisions to the person and their chosen helpers, including under self-direction where FMS teams already track spending.
